Health Reimbursement Arrangement (HRA)

An HRA is only available to employees who are not eligible for an HSA due to enrollment in Medicare, Tricare, or VA Benefits.

When you enroll in the High Deductible Health Plan (HDHP), Cabarrus County contributes to a Health Reimbursement Account (HRA) which you can use to pay for eligible health care expenses.

Unlike other health care accounts, only your employer can put money in an HRA. Each time you visit the doctor or receive health care services, you can use the funds in your HRA to pay for eligible medical expenses, such as prescription drugs and copays.

How the Plan Works

  • Twice a year (January & July), Cabarrus County deposits $500 into your HRA, for a total of $1,000 annually (new hires receive a pro-rated amount).
  • The money in your HRA can be used to pay for eligible health care expenses and counts toward your deductible.
  • After the money in your account is used up, you are responsible for all of your health care expenses up to the annual deductible amount.
  • When you reach the annual deductible, you and the health plan share the costs (coinsurance) for covered services.
  • Funds not used during the plan year roll over to your account the next year.
